Collections and Cavitations
Collections are a form of perceptual organization, an order that things are consciously placed in. Nature is described as a having a natural order, and it is intuitive perception that categorizes this in order. I visited what I refer to as an Urban Island, a pseudo natural landscape that has been torn down then rebuild in the order of how nature is perceived. These Urban Islands are isolated by freeway off-ramps, on-ramps, highways and other intersecting roadways and are for the most part inaccessible to people. Collecting, from a number of random locations across the island I stopped, picked up, pulled or scooped out what was found at each location. The result of removing what was at each given spot both filled a jar and left a cavitation like area. Before moving on to the next location I placed the jar back on the displaced ground and took a photograph to observe the contained collection sitting in the space it once occupied, but now in an organized manner, a categorized manner.
